Accord Native Community Garden
Located in Van Cleve Park, near the intersection of Como Avenue SE and 15th Avenue SE, the Accord Native Community Garden wraps around Norman Anderson’s Accord sculpture—crafted from old organ pipes that chime in the wind each day at noon, 3:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and 9:00 PM.
This garden was lovingly cultivated by SE Como gardener Rose Steinhart. Although Rose is no longer with us, a dedicated group of SE Como volunteers continues her work—caring for the plantings and keeping the space healthy, beautiful, and welcoming.
In 2018, volunteers refreshed the garden with a new sign, expanded the planting area, and added additional native species. We also removed sod around the sculpture to help direct rainfall into the garden—functioning like a small rain garden and putting water where it’s most useful.
Native plants matter. They provide food and habitat for pollinators—the bees, butterflies, and birds that help ecosystems thrive. Pollinators support about 90% of flowering plants and 75% of our food crops, and neighborhood gardens like this one give them the spaces they need to survive and flourish.
