Marshall Field Pollinator Patch
Van Cleve Park — near Como Avenue SE & 13th Avenue SE
The Marshall Field Pollinator Patch was created to expand pollinator habitat in Van Cleve Park and add another vibrant native garden to the neighborhood.
The project began when former Park Director Jordan Nelson identified this location as an ideal site for a new native planting area. The idea gained momentum as Southeast Como volunteers worked on a grant proposal for a community Pollinator Party and looked for opportunities to grow local habitat for bees, butterflies, and other pollinators.
From Idea to Garden
In early 2020, approval for the garden was secured through collaboration with multiple partners, including Minneapolis Public Schools, which owns the land. After refining the design to meet site requirements, a “No-Money” agreement allowed volunteers to install and manage the garden.
The project was powered by community support:
Private donors Karl and Lila funded the removal of sod
Volunteer coordinator Lauren organized planting efforts and ensured COVID-19 safety during installation
Designed for Pollinators
The garden was planted with native perennial species chosen to support pollinators—especially the endangered Rusty Patched Bumble Bee—and to provide blooms from April through October.
Ongoing volunteer care keeps the garden thriving, including:
Watering during dry periods
Monthly weeding and litter cleanup
Spring trimming of perennial plants
Today, the Marshall Field Pollinator Patch continues to grow as a welcoming habitat for pollinators and a beautiful green space for the community to enjoy.
