The Como Cookout began in 2003 as a collaborative effort between the University of Minnesota’s Office for Off-Campus Living and the Southeast Como Improvement Association (SECIA). Its original goal was to foster better relationships between student renters and long-term residents of the Southeast Como neighborhood, many of whom had experienced years of disruption from noise, litter, and transience. The early events were modest—a few tables, a grill, and some games—but they quickly gained popularity.
Over time, the Cookout expanded well beyond its original scope. Organizers began incorporating local artists, musicians, and performers into the programming. Resource fairs were added, connecting residents with services from the City of Minneapolis, neighborhood organizations, and university departments. A growing emphasis on cultural inclusion brought new elements to the event, such as Somali cuisine, Indigenous dance, and student-led K-Pop performances. These expansions reflected Como’s shifting demographics and the community’s desire to celebrate its diversity.
However, in recent years, the Como Cookout has faced funding and capacity challenges. Support from the University has remained steady but limited, and neighborhood funding from the City of Minneapolis has declined due to citywide budget changes and the restructuring of neighborhood organizations. As a result, organizers have had to scale back—offering simpler food options, limiting the number of paid performers, and reducing the footprint of the event. Despite these challenges, the Como Cookout serves as a vital space for building relationships in the neighborhood, even as its programming has returned to a more grassroots feel. Its endurance is a testament to the commitment of residents, students, and volunteers who continue to believe in the power of a shared meal and a moment of connection.
