Hennepin Island Hydro Power Project

Water Power Park will close July 3 for maintenance and reopen in mid-April

An upcoming maintenance project at Xcel Energy’s Hennepin Island Generating Station, a hydroelectric facility located on the Mississippi River in Minneapolis, will ensure the long-term stability of the earthen dam that forms Hennepin Island. A new underground concrete wall will prevent water from infiltrating through the island’s foundation, preserving the dam and adjacent Water Power Park for future generations.

Construction work is expected to begin in July and conclude in December 2025. Project schedules are subject to change.

Water Power Park will be closed to the public from July 3, 2025 until mid-April 2026.
